A surprise

So after doing the freebies in Calla I went looking round their store and look what I found.

Viggo Mortensen is modelling for them. (Its a bit blurry because the resolution of the board texture isn’t high enough for a close-up).

In case you don’t believe me. here’s proof:

Viggo

Damn, whoever that model is, actually got the SHAPE right as well as the hair.

Total cost: priceless

PS: I’m off on me hols for a week, see you in July.

More new hair

As I refuse to wear stolen hair I decided to check out a couple of designers to see about their own freebies. At least I know these aren’t stolen.

First up, Wonderhair. They have 2 styles of mens hair and they’re absolutely free, Joey is a short neat preppy style and Jack is similar but longer and more flexi. (I have to confess I kind of like to see guys with longer hair).

Second, Sirena, which has one style for men priced at L$1 for a pack of 4 colours. I picked the Brown Tips one here and show Chocolate-Black, and Sandy-Blond.  Oh boy, I look as bad with light coloured hair in SL as I do in RL. Don’t ever suggest I go blond.  Incidentally Sirena hair comes with built in facelights (which can be turned off on script command). These normally annoy the f*** out of me but for taking snapshots they’re great.

Next is Bryce, which has one freebie style, this one’s shorter and a bit “messier” which is more like the sort of thing I usually wear. I don’t do neat, as you’ve probably guessed by now. This one’s definitely a keeper.

Finally I visited Calla. There is a freebie box on display upstairs (teleport from the map) which contains one style in 4 colours. Again its a short, preppy sort of style.

Total cost today: L$1 for one pack at Sirena, all the rest free.

Hyate’s Hair

A while back I posted about the “Sex on Legs” hair that I picked up from Velvet Freebies.

Well today I just discovered that it’s stolen.  What it actually is, is the Shun style in Brown-Black from Hyate’s Hair Lab. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Harajuku/118/90/22

I picked up the demos and took a snapshot to compare. (The Hyate demo colour shown is Umberblack. The freebie is Brown-black which wasn’t available in this style in the demo but was available in one of the other styles. This hair is absolutely identical in every way.

So forget everything I said about picking up that hair. It also apparently goes by the name of Cabelo in the freebie & BIAB circuit, so watch out for that and don’t bother with it.

I felt guilty so I bought one of Hyate’s hairs anyway. They actually are really good. And I also got informed that my bf’s been wearing Shun for weeks.  *facepalm*

ETA: I have dropped a notecard with a landmark and a copy of the rogue hair to Hyate, in case there is anything he can do to get the stolen one removed.

Here Comes Trouble

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Troubled%20City/218/149/25

Here Comes Trouble has 12 hairstyles for men at L$1 each.  These are a particularly good bargain because each style comes in about fifty colour combinations. A lot of them are funky punky colours, so I had a lot of fun with these. Except the Flexi Pony style, which I cound not get to fit no matter how I adjusted the hair or my head size. Nor, apparenlty, could I get a photo with my eyes open – maybe I was cringing, hoping no-one noticed the bald patch on the other side. It seems there’s no way to avoid either bald patch, or hair coming through your eyes at the front.  Some of those interior prims seriously need to be adjusted, or deleted.  Only one is flexi, but the spiky punky ones don’t really need to be. If this was RL you’d have put a ton of gel and hairspray on them anyway.

The hats on “Beanie” and “Slacker” are scripted to change colour, as is the ponytail band in “Ponytail” and “Flexi Pony”.  Disturbed, Punk and Slacker are my favourites of the three.

Without further ado, here’s the full range.

Beanie Braids Disturbed Flexi Pony

Hatz Hawk Mess Ponytail

Prep Punk Slacker Warrior

Total cost: L$12 (for 12 hairstyles)

Valiant

First off, an apology for not posting recently – have been busy with RL things and likely to be that way for until the second week in July (going on vacation in RL shortly).

Now I got a recommendation from a reader of this blog to pay a visit to Valiant Menswear in Stormwind.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/StormWind/114/105/24

There is a bag of freebies available on a shelf just inside the door, and it is chock-full of really good stuff.  Most of the items are casual – shirts, shorts, hoodies and so on, but there is also a blazer and pants set which looks very classy. Nearly everything in this pack has sculpted parts; pockets, cuffs and turn-ups, and it’s all really good looking.  There are altogether five casual tops, three pairs of shorts, plus the blazer suit. Incidentally some of the items in the bag are boxed – when I rezzed one of them it carried a price tag of L$225.

I was also advised to join the store’s update group because they are reputed to be generous to members with freebies.

(All worn with the “Sex on Legs” hair and the Redford skin, both of which I picked up from Velvet the other week).

Total Cost: L$0

Name and Shame

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Irie/123/244/27

wowzat Trenchco is selling freebies for L$100 a piece at a mall in Irie. Everything here you can get for nothing or nearly nothing at one of the places I’ve already written about. He has the nerve to stick a L$100 price tag on an item that the creator clearly priced at L$68.

I wish there was an easy way to alert new residents to this sort of thing. I hate to think of how many people have fallen for scams like this.

Mooncat Izumo

http://slurl.com/secondlife/MoonCat%20Izumo/146/24/26

This little Japanese fashion store will appeal to everyone who’s got a little Neko in them – as the name implies there are a lot of cat-themed accessories here. The second floor of the store is chock-full of freebies and dollarbies; clothes and accessories for both men and women, even a bunch of poses for the AO.

So here’s what I picked up:

1) A pair of nice grey ckecked pants, here teamed with a t-shirt that I think was probably made for girls.

2) Same t-shirt in a different colour, with a pair of denim dungarees all covered in paint. Perfect to wear when building.

3) Hair complete with Fedora hat.

4) Hip bag with kitty book tucked into it.

5) Men’s suit. What I especially like about this suit is something that you don’t often find: shirt and jacket on seperate layers so you can mix and match. And a copy/mod prim tie. So you can get yourself some new textures and make some more.

Total cost for items shown here: L$6

New Free Avatars

For these freebies you need look no further than the Library section of your own inventory. Linden Labs has added a range of new avatars which are available to starting players, and are much superior to the old ones. They were apparently added yesterday, although I didn’t realise it until the news reached the forums.  I have taken pics of the male avatars here.

Boy Next Door Clubgoer Gamer 2 (Wood Elf) Musician Professional

There are equivalent female ones too, and a couple of non-humans – a cardboard robot and a small dragon. All the avatars are made by big-name designers in-world – Renegade Designs, Adam and Eve, Grendel’s Children etc.

Velvet Freebies

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Zugspitze/228/204/75

This freebie store floats in the sky above Velvet Manor strip club, but don’t let that put you off. I picked up a ton of clothes here, plus a skin and two hair. Again as with the GQ Start store, a lot of the freebies here are ones that were on sale for L$5 at Freebie Dungeon.

The first hair is a shaggy blond one, teamed with the Redford skin from the previous post. Second up is a hairstyle called, amusingly, “Sex on Legs”. Its very similar to the flexi biker stile from F D, except with a shinier texture, which makes it great for adding tints to. UPDATE 27th June:  This hair is actually the Shun hair from Hyate’s Hair Labs and is loose on the Freebie and Business-in-a-Box circuit without the permission of the creator, Hyate Ewing. (Please note – I am not implying here that Velvet Manor are responsible for stealing the hair – this would have been done at some earlier stage most likely by someone with a Copybot.  The copied hair then gets re-sold with full perms, and that is how it ends up being distributed without the creator’s knowledge or permission).

Also shown here is the Travis skin. It claims to be moddable but in fact only the face is an alpha texture, so if you move the sliders at all, the face tone no longer matches the rest of the body. But if left alone it looks pretty good.

As for the clothes, I picked up a lot here so I’ll just post the thumbnails and let you browse.  My favourites are the jeans from pic #4 and the Che Guevara t-shirt from pic #7.  The football shirt in pic #8 is one of a range of European footy shirts also including Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Oddly though, they’re made on the undershirt layer.

Incidentally the location for this photoshoot was the Bay City Docklands. Well worth a visit.

G Q Start

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Zugspitze/228/204/75

Remember I said to be careful in Freebie Dungeon, that some items are L$5 or more? Well here I found a place giving some of those L$5 items away for free, so it often pays to wait. GQ Start is a place that offers not just freebies but information and classes for new residents, although unlike NCI it was empty when I paid it a visit.

Before I get on to the clothes I would like to mention two of the skins on offer here. One of them is Cody, which I already picked up from Sarah Nerd’s. The other is called Redford, and is very similar but with a slightly lighter tone. The facial hair on this skin is a really nice six-o’clock shadow, and there’s also a shaved-head shadow on the head too. Here shown both without prim hair, and with the Flexi from Freebie Dungeon. This one’s definitely a keeper.

Next up, these awesome grungy combat boots with rusty steel toecaps and a bloodstained knife tucked into one of them. I also picked up a pack of camo pants in assorted colours, here showing them with the Urban ones. I had to shorten the length in order to show off the boots properly, but they’re all full perm so no worries there.

On to the clothes.  Quite a few of the selection here are available in other places so I have just noted the outfits I didn’t pick up elsewhere. First with the athletic look; a grey vest and low-rise blue sweat-pants. Third, and my favourite of the three, a pair of jeans and a zipped grey and white casual jacket. And finally something a bit more dressy, a black suit with unbuttoned silky pink (but moddable) shirt.

Overall, limited choice but everything is genuinely free. Total cost L$0.
